WCWC is founded on four core values that drive our work…

Equity

  • Everyone is a writer. WCWC honors all languages, literacies, and funds of knowledge, and we center anti-racist, anti-bias, and anti-oppression approaches in everything we do.

Access

  • Writing is a way to access our full humanity. We believe that writing can be a humanizing, healing act of care when we have access to our own language, the ability to write freely, and the freedom to share widely. WCWC will opportunities for students and community members to access these fully humanizing writing opportunities.

  • Every writer deserves full access our program. WCWC commits to removing barriers to entry to our organization so that all students have the ability to be part of our organization safely. We will always meet students where they are, celebrate and affirm their identities, and eliminate barriers to full participation in WCWC.

Inclusion

  • Everyone can find writing success as their fullest selves. No person should have to hide parts of their identity to find writing success or a willing audience. Writing can help humans know, see, affirm, and celebrate their identities and the identities of others in the community in order to create a sense of inclusion and belonging.

  • Inclusive youth-driven spaces are critical to our community. WCWC seeks students from all backgrounds, identities, ages, schools, and school districts to learn, engage, and lead with us.

Collaboration

  • Writing is a community act. WCWC believes that writing is more than an individual act. Writing, in all forms, can help us build strong, vibrant communities by allowing us to share incredible stories, ask big questions about ourselves and our society, work together to advocate for change, and imagine different futures together.

  • We are better together. WCWC earns the trust of students, teachers, and organizations in our community. We will design our programs and events from the margins to ensure all of Washtenaw County, especially those who are historically marginalized, are represented.
